Dear Mr. Weinstein and the staff of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, just a short note of sincere thanks which means a lot to those of us who are writing it to you.

We are a group of half a dozen flag officers on active duty in the United States military. (The term “flag officer” means either a General or an Admiral.) For the record, we all practice the Christian faith in one form or another.

The last 6 to 8 months for all of us have been the most destructive set of circumstances we have ever encountered during our long careers in the United States armed forces. The morale, good order, discipline and general welfare of our troops is at an all-time low as a result of many factors but especially the intentional attack on military unit cohesion. It has been and currently remains devastating.

The current senior leadership at the Pentagon and White House have outlawed the fundamental foundations of the unification and cohesion of military fighting units. Celebrating “e pluribus unum” and the strength that comes with diversity, equity and inclusion, previously nurtured by our American armed forces leadership for generations, have been eradicated in just a few short weeks and months by this Administration with wanton vengeance and passion.

As a result of this witch hunt perpetrated by our most senior leadership, the American war fighting machine is broken. It is nowhere near the level of combat proficiency required to defend our national interests pursuant to our sworn oaths to the constitution.

The majority of us have been clients of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation during our ascendancy through the ranks. Those of us who are just now becoming clients, join the rest of us in saluting the courage and tireless effort exhibited by the MRFF for so many years. The MRFF has never failed to come to the aid of so many military and civilian DOD members who are suffering as victims of religious extremism, particularly Christian religious extremism.

We wanted to collectively take a moment to thank all of you at the MRFF for your incredible advocacy and presence for not just those of us writing this note to you but for all of our military brothers and sisters and veterans.

If we have any chance to defeat these forces attempting to destroy our United States military, it could never happen without the constant work of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

We thank you for always being there and implore you to stay in this fight. We are all depending on you to do so.

(All MRFF Client Generals’/Admirals’ names, ranks, military branches, MOS/AFSC designations, assigned commands and installations, and related ID withheld)

I would like to express my thanks to these flag officers for standing up against the exclusionary religious fundamentalism being given free rein by the civilian leadership of the DoD! In my 20 years of service as a US Air Force enlisted member, there were a few suggestions of what was to come; however, both my wife and I retired before Christian Nationalism became overt enough that we would be uncomfortable serving. The fact that these flag officers are doing their best to protect people in their commands from discrimination gives me confidence that our more junior officers, all our enlisted personnel, and our DoD civilian colleagues will receive the support we enjoyed during our service. Thank you!

And let me second the officers’ notion that MRFF and the staff deserve our undying gratitude as well! Thank you for all you do!

You know, the one pet peeve I have with the military officer corps, in general, is the sycophancy training and inculcation they receive, aspiring, as one does, to be a part of the “don’t-make-me-look-bad” Brigade.

The higher one goes in their career as a military officer, the more political the position becomes, particularly at the flag officer level.

Part of the training, for ALL military members is, “we’re looking for innovative thinkers. We want you thinking ‘outside the box,’ as long as you stay within the framework!”

Interpreted, “If you come up with a good idea, I want to know about it so I can take credit for it!”

Flag officers, in particular, rely on subject matter experts, for obvious reasons (mostly because they’re sociology majors ;-)), they can’t be everywhere at once and know everything. Their job is to know the objective and know their people, the ones that are going to meet those objectives. They’re “people pushers,” in other words. Essential for military outcomes, except in non-combat roles,

But the “tooth-to-tail” ratio lends itself more to a subordinate being subordinated to the political nature of a senior leader’s fealty progression, blatantly on display in the current dictator’s cabinet. You want to puke in your own mouth listening to the regurgitation of accolades to the Dear Leader during his cabinet meetings!

If you ever want to know what a military officer’s thoughts are on a subject, ask his boss! They’ll tell you what he/she thinks!

The United States military is a socialist construct, everything provided by “The Government.” Talk about taking anything away from them and you’ll hear immediate teeth grinding, while they vote to take away any benefit to others in society, foremost in their heads, “I earned it,” a convenient self delusion.

People thank me for my “service,” and my response is always the same, “you do know I got paid for it, right?” Some look at me like I’m an ungrateful bastard but I want them to know it was my fucking job! Does anyone expect thanks for something they’re being paid to do? A service they receive money for? It’s not like I jumped into a river to save a drowning child.

I signed up, with eyes wide open, said I’d go to war, went to war, and got paid for it. Just like any other job. Nothing special, did what I signed up to do.

If I could change anything about the military, it would be the insertion of third-party arbitration for Commanders that let the “my soldiers” thing go to their heads, particularly those on the religious right!

Remember the years of sexual harassment training we all had to go through while Commanders refused to let third parties intervene? They called it POSH training, Prevention Of Sexual Harassment.

I wanted to see Prevention Of Homicide Training, :-) particularly for those that thought they “owned” everyone under their charge.

Yeah, I would change a few things. I believe it would empower folks to truly think outside the box without the framework bullshit, making the military more lethal.

    Just a thought.
