The Associated Press turned to MRFF as the preeminent voice on protecting religious freedom in the military for its article on Pete Hegseth, Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense — a rabid Christian nationalist who believes a “holy war” is “required” in America, led by “crusader in chief, Donald Trump.”

In the article, the Army’s Chief of Chaplains stated that chaplains serve more than 200 faith groups “while caring for the entire Army family … regardless of their personal beliefs.” I am able to personally refute that abject lie with the fact that while stationed in Korea in 1998, I was told by my battalion’s assigned Baptist chaplain to seek counseling from someone else because I was not a Christian. I am crediting MG Green that I have no doubt he is unaware that his statement was a lie, but it was.

Yovonne Autrey-Schell, I can attest to similar phenomena in the Air Force back in the 1980s. My wife and I, both active duty enlisted people, met and later decided to marry at Travis AFB. While I was away at NCO Leadership School, she asked chaplains at Travis if they would officiate the ceremony. Most of them simply said, “No”, but one actually told her that by marrying me, she’d be responsible for sending me to Hell!

Why, you may ask? Because my wife is Jewish. Discrimination much? Yeah.

She finally approached the Chief of Chaplains, a Catholic Priest, who not only agreed to officiate, but called all the chaplains together and “read them the Riot Act”. I can’t recall if she was there at the time or not. But only the Chief of Chaplains at Travis AFB followed his calling and Air Force and DoD regulations to minister to everyone’s needs!
