Marine Corps Scout Sniper Platoons

As you have seen fit to call out the use of a double S that is and has been used by Marine Corps Scout Sniper Platoons for decades I would like to ask when you will be asking the House of Representatives to remove the fasces from the wall directly behind the President of the United States when he gives the State of the Union Address? Also, this same fasces symbol will need to be removed from every circulating U.S. quarter and dime, the Lincoln Memorial, the front of the building that houses the Supreme Court of the United States, and any other U.S. Government building or insignia. As you may, or may not, be aware the fasces was used as a Nazi symbol throughout their reign. Seeing that you feel the need to call out U.S. Marine Scout Snipers for the use of what you deem Nazi symbolism this would only be fair for all.
Please feel free to respond with the anticipated date you will have all these items cleaned of the fasces (Nazi symbol).
Best regards,

Dear (name withheld),
Thank you for your note.
My name is Akiva Miller, I am the Veterans Coordinator for the
Military Religious Freedom Foundation. I am a decorated and disabled
U.S. Navy Veteran. I gave up my body and my health to defend this
nation and I believe I am qualified to speak on the subject of honor
in the military. But first of all, let me address your ridiculous
defense of the Marines in question. You claim that if we want the
Marines not to use the Nazi SS symbol we must also do away with the
multitude of fasces on decorations throughout the United States.
Obviously this argument is ludicrous on its face. First of all the
fasces decorates the very symbol of the Coast Guard (perhaps you
weren’t aware of that), secondly the fasces was never a prominent Nazi
symbol, and finally the fasces has been a symbol used all over the
world by a multitude of governments and other bodies since at least
the time of the Romans. But the fasces was never the prominent symbol
of any group of Nazis. It was the swastika and the SS lightening bolt
symbol behind which the Nazis marched and slaughtered six million Jews
and countless others. It was behind these symbols that countless
Americans were killed in battle, and murdered as prisoners of war. The
fasces continues to be widely used today without any Nazi connotation
attached to it, while the lightening bolt SS symbol is charged with
> hate and universally associated with the Nazis – the symbol is even
illegal in some European nations because of its affiliation with the
Nazis. So, you are talking about apples and oranges, or more like
apples and crematoria – these two things are absolutely different. The
fact that you try to use one to justify the other only demonstrates
the vacuousness of your intellect and integrity.
The reality is that what the Marines in question did, along with the
silence of their superiors, is devoid of honor. It disgraces the
uniform, the Corps, the U.S. Military, the flag, and the United States
of America. Your defense of indefensible acts such as these can only
be the result of your stupidity and lack of honor.
Good Day, Sir.

sir,
Just found this article. A little late but I feel the need to respond. First, thank you for your service and sacrifice. You were doing ok in your response about the ss symbology until your closing, when you decided to call into question the comment writers honour and mental accuity. As a fellow combat disabled veteran, let me say, injury in the service of our great nation, does not impute the right to call someone else’s honour into question. In fact, I believe, it demands a greater respect for other people and their right to disagree.
Now, to the basic argument you used against the gentlemans position. By your argument there are units in Poland, temples in India, and several other countries, that will need to remove the swastika from their edifices and uniforms. I daresay the Poles could hardly be called dishounourable, or stupid for their unit insignia, considering their history with the nazis. Furthermore, you are wrong about the fascii. They were indeed used during wwII, just not by the nazis. Instead they were the prominent symbol of the fascists of Italy and Musssolini. By the way, I do not suggest the removal of the fascii from any of our buildings/money.
Finally, I will suggest to you that there has been a wrongheaded infatuation with the German military of wwII, and even some “respect” for the ss within my Corps. While at OCS, I was surprised to hear the hint of “respect” for the training techniques of the ss, when introduced to several training systems used there. I agree with those that say these snipers clearly knew what they were doing. I guarantee you they thought the initials ss of scout sniper would give them cover, and I am sure they also do not understand the pure evil of the ss. In my opinion, that is because we no longer teach strongly enough about the war, nor do we allow ANY “judgemental” descriptions of evil men. But that is another discussion for another day.
Please stay true to the tolerance your organisation demands.
Thank you for your time,
Jim S
