MRFF Demands Equal Advertising of Courses on Non-Christian Religions After Air Force Academy Hawks Course Devoted to Christian Apologist C.S. Lewis

“The Air Force Academy last week published an article focusing on a Philosophy Department course that teaches based on the non-fiction works of Christian apologist C.S. Lewis, featuring such works as ‘The Abolition of Man,’ which is popular among politically conservative circles.

“It’s telling that the academy’s public affairs team chooses to cover this course in particular without mentioning the diversity of courses offered by the Philosophy Department or other departments in the institution that focus on non-Christian faiths that might have a more liberal worldview. The article is effectively virtue signaling to the dominionist factions within the academy’s staff and graduate communities, saying, ‘We’re a safe place for you to practice the belief that Christians are morally superior to members of other faiths.’”

I read C.S. Lewis’s book “Mere Christianity,”and it is the worst example of a philosophy book I have ever read. It is full of unsound arguments based on misrepresentations of facts and blatant lies. It is also replete with hyperbole. I doubt that very many modern philosophers take Lewis’s books seriously as a contribution to the study of philosophy.

The Air Force Academy is clearly pushing a biased religious agenda on cadets. Once again this violates the alleged purpose of an Academy education and is very disrespectful of the religious rights of cadets and all the efforts of the cadets to get a good education.

Jeff dont pretend like you read a book or that you could ever make it through one. You didnt provide one single example.

The thread on LinkedIn quoted in the comments has blown up. I’m arguing with several people about the MRFF. One called Mikey a squeaky wheel, and I finished his idiom by reminding him that squeaky wheels get the grease. MRFF gets all the grease.

  5. Thewheel September 2, 2024 at 1:15 pm

Except the grease is supposed to make the wheel stop squealing. Its a never ending crybaby screamy squeal wheel that never can be quiet. Replace the wheel.

Mrrfsucks: your defense of Mere Christianity through personal attacks on me that are childish and silly show that you aren’t really interested in knowing my objections to Mere Christianity – you are simply interested in attacking me because I don’t agree with C.S. Lewis and you. That approach to human interaction doesn’t deserve a response by me, but I’ll humor you anyway.

Here are a few examples of the silly and unsupported arguments made by C.S. Lewis in the book. I’m mention a few I remember off the top of my head – not all of my objections to his statements in the book, as that would take too long to write and cover too much space. First, there’s his statement that humans are different than “animals” (he mistakenly describes humans are non-animals) in that humans are capable of acting morally and ethically, while he asserts animals are not. That assertion has been disproven in many ways, and anyone who knew anything about animals would have known it, even in Lewis’ day.

Second, how about Lewis’ assertion that morality is “objective?” and must come from God. He thinks morality is consistent across all cultures (wrong) and therefore is “objective.” In his mind, that leads (with no reason) to the conclusion that morality must be provided to humans from an outside source – which according to Lewis can only be God. He has no verifiable, fact-based information to offer us to support those conclusions, but that’s what he said.

Lewis also argues that we can avoid a fear of just punishment from God for our sins and violations of moral goodness by following God’s commandments perfectly and trying to be Christlike. Of course, Lewis apparently gets to determine what is morally good and what is Christlike based on his personal reading of the Bible. He offers no other evidence to support his views.

In addition, Lewis apparently thinks Christ could not have been lying about being the son of God and the only path to salvation and heaven, and he cites the Bible as evidence to back up his claims. So, we have to agree with him that what is written in the Bible (his version) about what Jesus allegedly said is all true, or obviously his claims are not supported by anything. And we have no historical evidence at all to demonstrate that what Jesus is purported in the Bible to have said and did is true.

In all, in Mere Christianity Lewis ignored all of the biblical criticism made before him that had already rendered doubtful any literal reading of the Bible as if it is all historical fact. Lewis also ignored all of the scientific discoveries that were widely known at the time he wrote the book that made his assertions in the book ridiculous.

Incidentally Lewis also threw in a few childish insults of non-Christian belief systems, just for kicks. He called non-Christian religions “little boys religions.” That isn’t very scholarly or intelligent.

I hope that is enough examples for you. Maybe you should give the book another read and think again about whether is still holds up for you – that is, if you ever read it as I did. Have a nice day.

Thewheel: I’m 100% sure Mikey and MRFF will stop making noise when military commanders stop violating the constitutional rights of their subordinates and stop violating military regulations and start respecting the religious diversity of our military service personnel. Until that happens, I hope they do continue to squeal and encourage the commanders to do their jobs legally with the moral consideration befitting of our military institutions and our country.

Jeff, meant to be here earlier but disabilities don’t care if you want to do a thing, they are a law to themselves. Doesn’t look as though you need my help, you seem to be making the points.

That said, I took a look at the professors bio. Yeah, he presents as impartial but here is my issue –
“… Throughout his writing and teaching, he seeks to use philosophy to inform and inspire virtue formation. He is also particularly interested in defending the possibility of moral knowledge today and understanding the role that emotions play in the perception, understanding, and knowledge of objective moral truths.” he says.

The phrases ‘virtue formation’ and ‘moral knowledge’ are code words for an human must accept/believe/have faith in the Christian deity in order to really develop any sense of morality.

I’m not sure the Prof is using the books to debunk Lewis so much as he’s using them as examples of how to live ones life in a moral way. His bio screams nationalist Christian to me, but then I’m hyper sensitive to nationalist Christians being they intend to end me should they gain the reigns of power.

The class is problematic and the professor teaching the class… well, they may have received awards but being fantastic at nationalist Christian rhetoric isn’t the win they think it is.

Go MRFF – the Academy needs a thorough cleaning, inside and out. Every time I believe they’ve accepted the Constitution and DOD regs as their guiding star they sprout more religionist bias. Sunlight is an excellent cleanser.

    #AuditAllTheThings!

Thewheel’s logic is backwards, sideways, and pretzeled all at the same time. Just saying mate, you twist your dough that tight you won’t get a good bake. Or so I’ve been informed (HT Paul Hollywood).

I am fairly certain (as much as one can be without speaking for another) if EVERY nationalist Christian stopped breaking Constitutional and DOD regs Mikey and the MRFF Board would happily find other things to do. I bet gardening is even on that other things to do list.

Our many posting trolls are blaming the person cleaning the mess created by the person breaking the rules specifically by shoving their religion where it does not belong. No one has the right to proselytize another without their consent and as of yet I’ve only met two nationalist Christians who stopped when I asked them to leave me alone. Two out of thousands. Not a good look, just saying.

So, back to our trolls, the broken wheel advocates for lawlessness, using their words and logic. OOOKAAAAYYYYY you do you boo.

As for the rest and their inappropriate sexual musing? Had a thought or two on this, because of course I did.

Reading another seven posts of men arrested for child sexual endangerment, none of them Drag Queens, none part of the LGBTQAI+ community, all were entrusted with the care of kids – pastors, youth pastors, coaches, etc, and all but one was MAGA.

Such voices of authority historically made derogatory comments about the LGBTQAI+ community as groomers which made me wonder – perhaps they see us as this horrible thing because they know they are already doing horrible things so obviously since they are men of character and virtue due to their sincerely held religious beliefs the ‘others’ over there have to be doing something worse.

Yeah, I got into their heads and it was just as nasty and icky as you can imagine. The self justified smugness, the absolute confidence that while they are doing horrible things to boys and girls it’s all good because they are channeling the Voice of God.

We have a choice in November and it’s not like either side has been shy in telling you who they are. Winning the election isn’t the end game, it’s the start and We The People have a whole lot of sunshine to spread about.

the wheel – the military is a bus of a million wheels, al going round and round. All subject to needing lubrication. MRFF gets the grease for each wheel, in turn, because the military isn’t a particularly learning organization. The wheels don’t talk to each other, or rather, they know other wheels are getting greased but don’t care – they still want to prostletize and will do so until they are slathered in grease too.

One of the ways to tone down the Christian Nationalism is to defeat the fisher boy and lock his ass up!

A decade of putting up with Trump’s nonsense is more than long enough. He’s spiraling so it won’t be long before he lands himself in a padded cell, great outcome for the country.

Schittsinpants says, “there aborting babies after they’re born!” And wonders why he’s losing support (besides just being a weird loser). No Donnie, that’s not called abortion, it’s called murder!

He says kids are going off to school and coming home a few days later after sex change operations that the school decides. That dementia has definitely taken hold, won’t be long now, he’ll be slapping at imaginary flies, “I hate flies,” he says.

The doddering old fool! It’s way past your jail time Donnie! Need to get you in a rubber room somewhere so you don’t hurt yourself!

Now all of a sudden supports abortions, really pissing off his base and the evangelicals.

Says the Government will pay for IVF. The problem isn’t the payment, it’s the procedure, IVF slowed way down because of draconian State rulings that make doctors liable for fertilized eggs!

He can’t get out of his own way, the cognitive decline on clear display, slurring words, rambling, unable to complete a sentence.

The good news is that Christian Nationalism has taken a serious hit with Daffy Donald at the helm! Evangelicals for Harris on the rise!

    Get out the vote!

When the water on the beach recedes, leave the Trumpers there and get out! Blue tsunami coming!

Wonder if Trump will have a Bible in his cell. It wouldn’t matter, his plunging mental acuity definitely on the wane. The Bible can’t help Donnie!

Get out the Vote! And vote blue in all you do!

    You raise the blade
    You make the change

The Christian Right’s response to the Georgia shooting?

What else would it be? C’mon, let’s hear it. Would it be a call to make guns less available in this country? Would it be background checks? Red Flag legislation?

Or might it be States enacting legislation to lower the standards for open or concealed carry? Without license or training.

The Christian Right’s response? “THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!” If only that school had prayer in classrooms. God would have protected them! But the Lord works in mysterious ways! He allowed those people to die because, well, you know, just because.

They obviously didn’t pray hard enough!

We need to gather our children up before they go to school and have a family prayer.

“Dear Lord, the all powerful knowing God, the giver of life, our loving God, please let Johnny and Susie not get shot at school today. We know you are a loving God and we beg you, oh Lord, that if a shooter comes into their school, that you spare their lives and let them live to serve you Dear Leader, er, I mean, Dear Lord (sorry about that Dear God, it just slipped out). But we ask, Dear Lord, that if you let our Johnny and Susie live, they will serve you as you demand, knowing that you are righteous and just, and all powerful! Thank you for your love and kindness and please don’t let it be our Johnny and Susie that gets shot today! In Jesus name we pray. Amen.”

“OK Johnny and Susie, I think you’ll be safe today. When they do the active shooter drill, be the first to raise your hand! And don’t forget to pray if a shooter does come into your school! And send me a text so I can pray too! Now, off you go. You’ll be fine! Just remember, the Lord loves you!”

In the meantime, Mommy writes to the Governor and asks for more guns and more open carry, not to mention the Ten Commandments in every classroom, prayer in school, and no more “Moms For Liberty” lesbians that engage in threesomes with their husband!

You know, “more good guys with guns.” Ask Trump how that worked out for him!

That’s it! More “thoughts and prayers!” Those families will get over it, the loss of a child or teacher – as long as they pray and come-to-Jesus!

They say time heals all wounds. But the ones that opened up the faces of elementary kids at their desks in Uvalde – ummm, not so much! Closed casket funerals for elementary children, the Nation’s greatest National and natural resource, because they were unrecognizable, too grotesque to view, the pain, agony, and despair of losing a child to gun violence haunting those left behind for the rest of their lives, wondering how and most importantly, why?

The Christian Right should be ashamed of their “thoughts and prayers” gaslighting.

But they’re not. As long as it wasn’t my kid that got shot – you need to pray more!

“More guns! USA, more guns, USA!”

Sleep well! And don’t forget to pray before your kids go to school each day!

Those poor kids and teachers. If only they had prayed a bit more! Such a shame!

Oh well. Hey, there’s a football game on this weekend! You kids wanna watch it with us? I think our team is gonna win!

    Go Christians!

The shootings have proven that the saying “that it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy who has a gun” has no validity at all; otherwise, bad people (including bad cops) would think twice about using their guns and committing crimes.
