U.S. Congressman Huffman Grills DOT Sec’y Duffy Over MRFF’s Exposed Giant Jesus Painting at USMMA and Thanks MRFF for its Courage and Fortitude
In 2023, MRFF, acting on a complaint from a group of 17 alumni, midshipmen, faculty, and staff at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a number that quickly doubled, succeeded in getting an enormous painting of Jesus moved from the Elliot M. See conference room in the Academy’s administrative building to the chapel.
But now, as we’ve been reporting for the last few months, former reality TV star and Christian supremacist transportation secretary Sean Duffy is on a crusade to not only move the painting back to its completely unconstitutional former location, but to install a plaque for it that ends with this preposterous sentence:
“This painting has taken on historical significance and become a part of the Academy’s community, imparting varying meanings for different members of the Academy’s community.”
MRFF’s Mikey Weinstein has a message for Duffy about all those “varying meanings” he thinks a gigantic painting of Jesus could have, telling the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA):
“We especially look forward to taking your deposition and directly examining you on the witness stand during the trial where you can expand and extrapolate on the ‘varying meanings’ of a gigantic painting, showing Jesus Christ to the exclusion of any other God or non-God deity figure in support of sailors in distress at sea.”

“Courage and fortitude” the MRFF doesn’t know the meaning of any of those words.
courage: strength in the face of pain or grief.
fortitude: Fortitude encompasses both mental and emotional strength, enabling individuals to persevere through challenging situations.
Along with questionable credentials the old soldier needs to review their vocabulary list because both the words courage and fortitude exactly define both Mikey and the MRFF.
That painting to me is a symbol of oppression, not hope. To me it represents the overbearing presence for the past century of Christian dominated government. It tells me that I have no place here. It tells me the Constitution is not a document of ideals to live up to but instead is a sham, a mockery of hundreds of thousands of human hours trying to do something other than become the barbarians we all know we can be.
I’d love to be hopeful right now but I just read a clip about how HUD is putting time limits on how long a person can stay in public housing. As I’ve been where I live for over a decade I’m sure I’ll be forced on the street soon and that just has me doubting my loyalty to a country that won’t kill me outright, but it sure will force me out into the cold because… reasons.
So, came here, ran into the inanity that is the old soldier and just had to say a thing or two.
Also, Sec Duffy? For the record it’s Freedom OF religion and FROM religion. You don’t get to shove your faith into my face just like I don’t get to shove my ax in yours. See? Constitution is already working and I feel better.
Old Soldier, I think Grey One has some excellent points about what “courage” and “fortitude” mean. I think Grey One also raises excellent points about how the words apply to MRFF in general and Mr. Weinstein in particular. But before asking you how and why you seem to disagree, permit me to offer a few points of my own.
First, I’d like to proffer definitions of “courage” and “fortitude” from an expert source: the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The OED defines “Courage” as: “4.a. a1382– That quality of mind which shows itself in facing danger without fear or shrinking; bravery, boldness, valour.” OED’s definition of “Fortitude” is: “2. a1513 – Moral strength or courage. Now only in passive sense: Unyielding courage in the endurance of pain or adversity. (One of the cardinal virtues.)” These both track well with Grey One’s definitions of the words.
Second, it’s well documented that over the course of its 20 year history, MRFF and its founder have endured all manner of threats, disparagements, and mistreatment. MRFF staff have endured death threats to themselves and their families — yet they continue doing the work they’ve volunteered to do. Moreover, they do this work not to diminish Christianity: most of their clients are Christians themselves! Rather, they do this work in order to preserve freedom of religion — free of coercion from superiors.
So permit me to ask you two questions. First, how do your definitions of “courage” or “fortitude” differ from those Grey One or the OED offer? Second, specifically how does MRFF fail to live up to the definitions of “courage” or “fortitude?
