“Earlier this week our commander announced that only Christmas decorations were allowed in the headquarters facility where I work and under his command. He made it clear that the recognition of any other type of celebration would be unacceptable ‘wokeness’ which would not be tolerated under his command.”

“He seemed upset and said that since ‘it is well known that Hanukkah is the Jewish Christmas’ Jewish personnel should be satisfied when they see a Christmas display that it also includes Hanukkah. Obviously that statement is just FUBAR!”

“He also stated that since the events of Hanukkah occurred several hundred years after the birth of Christ, this shows that Hanukkah is part of Christianity. Also incredibly insulting and just plain wrong. The Maccabean rebellion involving Hanukkah occurred more than one and a half centuries prior to the birth of Christ.”

I agree entirely with the Jewish service members affected by the moronic commander — although I’d argue the COMMANDER is meshuggah and the DIRECTIVE is FUBAR!

I think if I were this service member “starting a family,” I’d be spending some time learning everything I could about the component’s “Joint spouse program?”

Going to see the commander put a self-inflicted target on his back. It’s given that this commander is a bigot, but the service member knew that before he went to see him. So … going to see the Commander to tell him you don’t believe in his Christian messiah, yeah, kind of like farting during Havdalah? He already knew the answer before he went to see him! So, the purpose was …… to make sure you get reassigned somewhere without your spouse?

I’m guessing “starting a family” means his spouse is pregnant.

Given the current environment with a drunkard Christian nationalist SECDEF, it’s not a good time to fall on your sword imo, particularly with a new baby on the way.

I get it being an on-principle issue but, there’s a certain practicality in terms of minimizing distractions in this service member’s life while trying to start a family.

He told his supervisor who he claims suggested contacting the MRFF. I’m guessing he didn’t know about the MRFF before he went to see the commander.

A “reassignment” separation, after all, one serves at the needs of the service, wouldn’t be in this service member’s best interests. Judaism isn’t going to collapse if this one issue gets put on hold. The complaint needed to be completely anonymous (hard to do in a military unit. A secret is something that gets told to one person at a time).

It’s a given that everyone in this unit knows who went to see the commander and for what reason. But it takes on a life of its own. It became a challenge to authority rather than an issue of religious faith imo. Particularly when you’re talking to a MAGA commander.

My advice for anyone facing a similar situation would be to contact the MRFF without bringing attention to yourself. The lowdown in the unit travels faster than AI can synthesize it!

Military life is hard enough without the extra distractions and possible career impacts like ……. family separation!

As Boz Scaggs sings, “putting your business in the street! ….. look out for that lowdown, that dirty, dirty, dirty, dirty lowdown!”

“Military justice is to justice what military music is to music!”
