Dear Mr. Weinstein,
I attended last night’s Veterans for Peace meeting—my first. I’m not a veteran, but many of my family members have served. I work as a behavior support consultant for adults with intellectual disabilities living in group homes, and I’m currently pursuing my PhD.
My work focuses on the myth of “deinstitutionalization,” and on the power imbalances and injustices people with disabilities continue to endure. I am the first in my family to attend college, let alone pursue a PhD, but as I’m sure you can imagine, staying focused during this time has been incredibly difficult. If my Dad were still alive, I know ICE could have easily targeted him, and I worry daily about my family’s safety.
I recently learned that my grandfather helped lay the concrete for the very sidewalks I use on campus every day. My Dad—a boxing trainer and a deeply committed advocate for social justice—raised me with resilience and drew great inspiration from his idol (and friend!), Muhammad Ali. I carry the strength of those who came before me, and I pay close attention to people who live with conviction and courage—people like you—because it gives me hope.
I know you don’t do this work for recognition, but I wanted to share, sincerely, how deeply grateful I am for what you do.
I also found one of your books at (name of university library withheld), and I look forward to reading it!
Wishing you peace and safety, and keeping you and your family close in my thoughts.
Warm regards,
(name withheld)
