Mikey,

I had something happen today that I think you might like to hear about. A former instructor of mine sent me an e-mail asking me if I would come by and talk to him before I left. I assumed he just wanted to say goodbye and wish me well (which of course was part of it), but what really surprised me was finding out how much he supported what I’m doing. When I went into his office, his office-mate was there, and he asked me to step out and go to an empty room to talk privately. Once we were there he told me that he fully backed the decision that I’d made and had seen countless incidents of clear religious privilege throughout his career, and even as a faculty member here. He mentioned what happened earlier this semester with Jerry Boykin and said that “we” worked to make that happen. At the end of the conversation he did exactly what so many others have done before and asked what he could do to help. I told him the same thing I’ve told everyone else, just continue to treat everyone equally, and don’t be afraid to report issues that you observe. He also volunteered to perform other more active forms of support, but for the sake of anonymity I don’t think I should share exactly what he intends to do. Knowing that there are field grade officers on the faculty here that support what I’m doing has changed the game entirely. This day could not get any better.
