I’m an AFA grad who has spent quite a number of years here. The other day, I heard the Dean speak to the faculty and staff on several issues that caught my attention.
The first issue up for discussion was the Gamble study on the religious atmosphere here. I’m not going to go into much detail, since you have already covered the main points. What struck me as odd was that the Dean told everyone that the study used a random sample of cadets and faculty. A random sample? I think not. The cadets and faculty self-selected to provide interviews. Not sure if this was a slip up, but this statement from the Dean was very misleading.
The second issue was with the Dean making a reference to the Honor Code by stating, “Thou shalt not steal” which is taken from the Bible’s Ten Commandments. Are we to trust our leadership with improving the religious atmosphere if they are the ones quoting scripture? She made no attempt to apologize for the remark. I’m not even sure if it registered that she just quoted the Bible during a staff meeting.
The Dean made other references to trusting leadership, but I had already tuned out after these two things. Of course I don’t trust USAFA leadership. Of course I’m going to address these with you, since the leadership clearly doesn’t get it.
What a shame and a sham. The current administration needs to go.
